Quantum Dialogues

Quantum Dialogues is a project to bring together early-career artists and quantum scientists, to explore current research in quantum science through an artistic lens. Each artist-scientist duo will work together to learn more about each other’s work and working methods, and produce an artwork and lay-person description inspired by quantum science. The artworks and descriptions will be combined into a public exhibit, offering the artists and scientists the opportunity to present their work and their experiences in collaborating with each other.
We will invite four Scottish, early-career artists and four early-career, quantum researchers to St Andrews for a one-day workshop in early to mid April 2026. Prior to this workshop, each artist will be matched with a researcher, and each duo will take part in activities that allow them to share their work and interests.
Led by a project team at the School of Physics and Astronomy, the artist and researcher will stay in contact, as each artist creates new work inspired by the science discussed, and the researcher will write a short, accessible piece to accompany the artwork. Both will also be asked to reflect on their collaboration, and how this interdisciplinary project has affected their views and work methods.
Artist-in-residence from the School of Physics and Astronomy Tim Fitzpatrick will lead from the artistic side; Dr Anne-Marie Weijmans will share her experience in bridging art, music and science; Prof Natalia Korolkova will provide expertise in quantum science.
The project is funded by the QUANTUM ARC: Scottish Research Alliance for Challenges in Quantum Technologies.
The resulting collaboration will be exhibited at the Byre Theatre, St Andrews in June 2026. Beyond this time we will seek to exhibit the works at future science events to be confirmed.
The project budget for each artist will be £625 with an additional £300 to cover materials and travel costs for attendance at the workshop and the resulting exhibition (both in St Andrews, Fife).
This opportunity is open to recent fine art graduates (within 3 years of full-time education), based in Scotland. Please submit your application to with the following:
