Colour-field opened to the public on the evening of Friday the 14th of June at 4pm. We’re now just about ready to go again for our second colour-field weekend – our solstice weekend – beginning tomorrow on Friday the 21st of June at 4pm and running through to Sunday 23rd of June.

The big question was always going to be, would the paper floor hold up. So far it’s doing fine. There’s a few creases that weren’t there to start with along with the slightest trace of a large boot print close to the entrance but, with those exceptions, it’s looking great. The point of the white floor – the reason that was so important – has been in the continuing quest for as much light as possible – bouncing, reflecting, diffusing – everywhere inside the dome. The floor in particular is an issue because lurking underneath the paper is an especially grimy Lino floor of a kind of reddish brown hue and heavily stained. Without the paper the old floor seems entirely capable of literally sucking the light out of the space and fighting against the installation generally. We thank each and every one of our audience who has happily walked the space in their socks and we definitely need a plan for the old Lino floor in the future.

Outside the new beds of wildflower annuals are forging ahead and looking good and very healthy, although only very green so far. I’m looking forward to that very first flower of colour. I really hope I don’t miss it.
