A seed of an idea for the Twin Dome Project, or at least the possibility of making use of the old observatory, began in 2015. This was the Shine project, a year-long collaboration for the International Year of Light between astronomer Anne-Marie Weijmans and musician Bede Williams – both of the University of St Andrews – and artist Tim Fitzpatrick. At the end of 2015 the new music and art created for the Shine Project needed a performance space and although the Twin Dome was considered and passed over, not quite right yet, the idea of somehow making use of this old observatory had begun.

The shared theme that began with the International Year of Light and the Shine Project, was the nature of light itself – the means by which all frequencies of light across the universe are carried in coded form that help us to understand the nature of the universe. This theme has underpinned all the output of the Shine Project collaboration ever since.
