August 2024 – bright new dome

When I first encountered the Twin Dome nearly 10 years ago, the general appearance of the exterior was very much one of a forgotten and somewhat neglected building. The painting of the neon spectrum in 2018 shifted the focus a bit in that now it might be seen as a slightly more interesting, neglected building. Then in 2022 it was given a revitalising coat of white paint and the neglected tag didn’t seem to quite fit any more. Except it still did.
The exterior walls were crisply white but the actual dome – not included in the decorator’s refresh package – now looked scruffier than ever. In the building’s new life lots of photographs were called for (on this page and elsewhere) but there was always a dilemma, what about the scruffy dome? Crop it, photoshop it or maybe just rename it “The scruffy Dome”.
Finally, this month, that persisting irritation is gone. Our calls for a steam clean had made their way to the top of someone’s to do list and, without any kind of fanfare (which it surely should have been given), the dome was beautifully bright and white again. I’m now more than happy to photograph it from any kind of angle I like.
