Late September 2024 – Looking back on the year

The Twin Dome events programme for 2024 has now wrapped up with Beyond the Horizon. It seems an excellent place to pause, leaving open the opportunity to maybe finish beyond the horizon next year.
Looking back it’s been a brilliant year and the Twin Dome has taken several more steps back from the brink of abandonment of about six years ago. Four new shows for 2024, a newly established wildflower meadow and then throw in a gleaming white dome to top it all off.
In the meantime there’s one last task to complete for 2024. These past couple of weeks the wildflowers are looking decidedly past it. They’ve been a hugely popular visitor attraction for countless bees (and other insects) but now it’s time for seed harvesting before we start preparing the ground for next spring. In terms of a colour mix things seemed to reach a kind of Monet-meadow perfection in the last few days of July. After that I noticed that the corn marigolds rapidly outgrew all their rivals to a point of near exclusivity. I need to remember to include a good deal less of them in next year’s seed mix.
Beyond seed harvesting it’s about turning our thoughts to 2025. First up for ‘25 is likely to be the annual Observatory Open Night some time in March (date tba). That’s currently on standby for a re-working of the Beyond the Horizon installation but with a night-time version of the lighting. Beyond the Horizon dramatically reinvented.
