20th February 2025 – Starting another year

Three weeks to go until Open Night and the transition of Beyond the Horizon from daylight to night is taking shape
As with the last two Open Nights the challenge has been to re-work an existing installation into one where it responds to an artificial light rather than the sunlight which floods through the large east facing window during the day.
The curtain of photographic negatives from 2024 remain as the point of focus – or should that be the plane of focus – but now there is a ribbon of light which will fade over a period of time.
In this case, the period of time (about ten minutes) corresponds with the running time of a piece of music. The music is by Gothenburg based, ambient/improvisational group Trio Ramberget and the piece is Fading Away in Blue. I first heard the music some months ago on Radio 3s Night-tracks and that first hearing immediately seemed to connect me with the curtain of stars and galaxies inside the Twin Dome. I’m thrilled that the trio (and guest artist Matti Bye) have agreed to collaborate.
There are still lots of sound checks still to do – the cylindrical space comes with some unusual acoustics – but we’re expecting to get the speakers positioned and rigged in the next few days – and then I’m looking forward to see/hear what happens!
