Twin Dome: past, present and future

There has been something of a hiatus on this page (I’ve been busy delving into the past). So apologies for the significant period of being awol but I’m back now. The history of the Twin Dome has been something that several of us thought we had a good grasp of but, after my period of research – leading up to the recent exhibition for Open Night and keeping me away from the blog – we now know so much more. Quite a bit of it runs counter to what we understood and we’ve also been able to join lots of dots for things that we guessed at but couldn’t be sure. There are still some holes though.

The two pictures above are from 1979 or maybe 1980. They are clearing the site where the Twin Dome now stands and the arrival of the dome (waiting to be re-joined together). The two main archives which I have been very submerged in are the photo collections of Roger Stapleton and Ron Hilditch, both of the School of Physics and Astronomy at St Andrews and the library of the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. Ron Hilditch told me that those Scots Pines that were felled were the home to families of Red Squirrels at the time. I hope they found a new home eventually. Maybe their descendants ended up at Tentsmuir, a hop and a skip over the old course and onwards, about 5 miles, along the coast. Not sure how they would have made it over the River Eden though. Any suggestions on a postcard. I will return to the picture of the lorries – I found a theme.
